Mikado Fabrics

Mikado Fabrics

Mikado fabrics are particularly popular as they offer structure but are also soft to the touch. We offer a good range of Mikado in both polyester and silk and also an Eco Mikado fabric choices. Known for being slightly grainy or textured on the surface, many Mikado fabrics benefit from a slightly raised or textured finish and this is part of the popularity of this elegant bridal fabric. This type of Dress Fabric is also soft and often has a slight sheen.

BUY OUR MIKADO, A FABRIC IDEAL FOR MAKING WEDDING DRESSES

The word "mikado" is used in Japan to refer to the emperor, and this eponymous fabric is imbued with all the royalty and elegance that its name suggests. The Mikado is made in compliance with a technique originating from Japan that is based on a very specific treatment of silk.  Though many of our Mikados now originate in Europe, this technique gives the fabric its voluminous handle and luminous appearance.  Silk Mikado is also known as Zibeline silk, though Mikado is by far the most well known term for this type of bridal fabric.

Whether made of polyester or made from silk, Mikado offers a particularly attractive luminous finish that lends itself perfectly to the creation of the most vibrant wedding dresses. The fall of the Mikado fabric is majestic, which allows the sewing of grandiose and well-structured dresses.  The fabric is well suited to wedding dress silhouettes such as  A-line, ballgown, mermaid, mini or tea length.

A WIDE VARIETY OF MIKADO FABRICS

Here at Bridal Fabrics, as the partner and chosen fabric supplier of so many dress designers we ensure that we have an excellent range of Mikado fabric to meet your needs. Our most popular Polyester Mikado fabric has a perceptible weave but smooth and luminous finish.  This fabric comes in light ivory, dark ivory, white and a range of colours which would suit the creation of any garment including Christening gowns, bridesmaids and  flower girl dresses. We offer another poly Mikado called Endearment which has a more perceptible texture, typical of this category of bridal fabric.

We also stock a good range of silk and silk blend Mikado including a luxurious option called Jamboree, which has a clear texture and a gorgeous sheen to the fabric.  Please do look at the dress pictures on the product page to evaluate how a finished garment might look.  Court is an extremely popular option and we also have eco Mikado fabric for the eco conscious bride or bridal designer. A super heavy and super luxury option would be Emotion with its rich and opulent handle.

Mikado Fabrics FAQ

Bridal Fabrics' Mikado range combines the refined sheen of silk with a textured weave using synthetic or silk blends. This distinctive composition gives the fabrics a structured handle, making them superb for crisp silhouettes - think architectural ball gowns, mermaid cuts, and regal A‑lines. The moderate weight and subtle gloss lend a luxurious finish to both minimalist and embellished designs. The choice of silk‑blend or poly versions allows designers to achieve dramatic form while maintaining wearability and depth of colour.

Mikado is perfect for gowns that need structure: it holds tailored seams, pleats, and voluminous shapes beautifully. Designers favor it for fitted corsets, mermaid and trumpet shapes, A‑line and full ball gowns, even tea‑length looks. Its stiffness supports internal structuring and crisp folds, delivering dimensional, sculptural effects that softer fabrics can’t achieve. For sleek sheath or fit‑and‑flare gowns, Mikado offers a clean finish and architectural polish that flatters the figure without collapsing.

Bridal Fabrics offers Mikado in a striking palette - from classic ivory and white to jewel tones like sapphire, blush, powder blue, and even eco‑dye options. Variants like 'Endearment' have a pronounced textured weave, while silk‑blend versions such as 'Jamboree' and 'Court' deliver more luminous depth. Certain options (e.g., eco‑soft Mikado like 'Ensconce') prioritise tactile softness - an important factor if the fabric is worn next to delicate skin. The choice of weave density and blend affects how details - like folds or pleats - register visually and texturally.

While Mikado excels in formal structure, its heavier weight means it’s best suited for cooler climates or indoor, air‑conditioned venues. In very warm environments it may trap heat and show perspiration easily. That said, bridal designers occasionally use lighter silk‑blend options and high‑low skirts or cropped styles to balance volume with breathability - though overall Mikado remains a winter‑leaning fabric.

Mikado offers a subtle matte to semi‑lustrous finish with a textured weave, while duchess satin provides a smoother, glossy surface. Mikado is heavier and stiffer, holding sculptural shapes and crisp lines better. Satin drapes, Mikado shapes. Both resist wrinkles and provide polish, but Mikado lends itself more to minimal, architectural forms. It’s generally pricier and more durable than satin blends, making it a favourite for bold, minimalist design statements.

From Bridal Fabrics, you can request free samples (typically the first two at no cost) to assess drape, sheen, opacity and colour in person. Seeing how each variant (poly vs silk blend, textured vs smooth) responds under different lighting and folds helps anticipate how the final garment will behave. Handling samples also helps determine if the fabric suits complementary embellishments like beading or lace overlays, and ensures the weight works well with your intended silhouette.
