Corded lace is always a popular choice as a wedding fabric due to its versatile nature but the end of 2012 saw a sharp rise in its use. The trend continues to gather pace and corded lace is now one of the most favoured types of bridal lace from the catwalk to the aisle.
Corded lace is also known as Alençon lace, after the town in France where it was originally exclusively made. Also called the 'Queen of Lace' due to its luxurious feel, corded lacemaking began during the 16th century. The industry quickly expanded with the establishment of a Royal Lace Workshop in the town, producing fine lace in the Venetian style in 1665. Created to reduce French dependence on expensive imports, the workshop employed skilled lacemakers who modified this traditional Venetian technique to produce Alençon lace from around 1675.
Formed by outlining details of the lace in a heavy thread, the three-dimensional look of corded lace is beautifully achieved. With a floaty and airy presence, this lace is perfect for a variety of styles of bridal gown and several examples evoke the feeling of fine, vintage lace.
One of our prettiest examples of this beautiful fabric is Rachel, a corded border lace with an open tulle ground. With alternating bouquet and garland floral motifs in fine shades alongside a larger floral design in a prominent position. The borders are identical and feature softly-fringed scalloped edges which accentuate the pyramidical shape. Rachel is a complex design with a delicate ivory shade that is sure to gain many admirers.
Specially selected in May 2012 in time for winter wedding dress material orders to be filled, the sumptuous Matilda corded lace is one of our premium choices. With a complex series of abstract flowers embellished with beads, sequins and small floral designs, this luxurious choice features a highly-open lace ground and so exhibits a wonderful natural stretch. Petals and leaves are outlined with extremely fine cord to give a truly stunning effect.
