Centuries of Elegance — Guipure Lace

Guipure lace is one of the earliest and most enduring types of the essential bridal fabric.

Guipure lace is one of the earliest and most enduring types of the essential bridal fabric. References to beautifully-designed guipure lace date back as far as 1327, when the clergy of Exeter Cathedral proudly listed four pieces among their possessions.

Also known as filet or Venetian lace, guipure is almost certainly a decorative form of lace that was derived from the netmaking skills of early fishing communities. The word guipure comes from the Old French meaning 'to cover with silk'. Guipure lace always features a continuously repeating motif that creates a much denser pattern and firmer texture than other laces, giving a truly elegant and luxurious feel. Often floral or geometric in design, the motifs are formed from closely-packed embroidery that is stitched onto an incredibly fine fabric. During the finishing process, this backing fabric completely disintegrates and so is not apparent in the finished article.

Effortlessly combining the vintage lace style with a contemporary feel, Grace Ivory Guipure Lace is designed to be eye-catching. Columns of petals form a striking geometric pattern that is interspersed with an elegant fan of teardrops. Identical edges that are double-scalloped with another fan of teardrops give this lace a gorgeous, sophisticated line.

Eva is another fantastic example of guipure lace available from Platinum Bridal Fabrics. This ivory fabric comprises two repeating motifs; an attractive spiral design and a flower with a leaf curling around it. Eva features a very open design and so is suited to using over opaque bridal fabrics. Matching borders complete this tasteful design, which is always in great demand.

An emerging trend is for brides to really get creative and make their wedding dress completely unique and personalised. One of the ways in which this can be achieved is by using lace that is not in the traditional bridal colours of white and ivory. Layla guipure lace in red features bead and sequin details that surround a large sunflower motif enhanced with fine, delicate cord. A range of other colours is available and Layla lace always creates a strong impression.
